Tin Shui Wai Plastic Beverage Bottle Recycling Programme

Since October 2022, we have recovered over 10 million plastic beverage bottles through our Tin Shui Wai community recycling initiative. All collected bottles are transported to our facility for proper processing and are transformed into new bottles, reinforcing a closed-loop, bottle-to-bottle recycling system within Hong Kong.

This programme is implemented under Drink Without Waste’s Community Plastic Beverage Bottle Recycling Programme, with a structured collection network operating across housing estates, residential buildings and shopping malls in Tin Shui Wai.

Octopus Payment Integration

Used beverage bottles are collected by cleaners and frontline collectors stationed at these locations. To enhance operational efficiency and transparency, we have partnered with Octopus Cards Limited (Octopus) to enable mobile payments for the many cleaners and frontline workers involved in the recycling process.

By leveraging Hong Kong’s widely adopted Octopus payment system, cleaners can efficiently record collection volumes and redeem recycling subsidies digitally. This arrangement provides an additional income stream for frontline workers while ensuring streamlined administration and accountability.

Financial incentives are provided to cleaners and recyclers to support the collection and transportation of used bottles. This incentive-based model strengthens the recovery network and encourages greater consumer participation in recycling.

Through this integrated community model — combining structured collection, digital payment solutions and local processing — the Tin Shui Wai initiative demonstrates how targeted district-level programmes can deliver measurable environmental impact while supporting grassroots stakeholders within the circular economy.
